3 Composting Tips From a Composting Expert

In honor of International Compost Awareness Week, we teamed up with our friend Kathryn Kellogg of Going Zero Waste! Kathryn is sharing her top 3 composting tips and we hope they inspire you to get creative. For more, we recommend following along with Kathryn’s blog where she shares actionable tips to leading a more sustainable, zero-waste life. No step is too small!

1. Keep your food scraps in the freezer. I have a small kitchen and like to have clear counters. A compost pail would take up too much room so instead, I keep a bowl in the freezer to collect all of my food scraps.

2. Just because something CAN be composted doesn’t mean it should be. So instead of hopping straight to composting, ask yourself if there’s another way to use your food scraps. Maybe you soak your citrus peels in vinegar to make an aromatic & non-toxic cleaner, save your onion and garlic skins to make homemade veggie broth, or dice your broccoli stems and make pickles!

3. My last tip is to remember that it’s better to be an imperfect composter than not compost at all! I had a free-standing bin in my backyard, which isn’t my preferred type. I would much rather have a tumble bin, but it’s still better to work through the learning curve of composting than it is to throw food scraps in the trash where they generate harmful methane. The world needs more imperfect composters!

If you want to learn more, check out this blog post for tips on finding which bin is right for you! You can also check out this blog post for my tips on backyard composting.
