Food Waste Movement

Producer Spotlight: Cooks Venture

Part of our mission at Imperfect is building a better food system for everyone. Beyond just fighting food waste, we’re constantly on the lookout for great producers who share this vision.

A New Breed of Chicken Grower

Cooks Venture is one of those producers we’re proud to partner with. Their chickens are a far cluck from your average grocery store bird. These heirloom chickens are pasture-raised on 800 acres of forested land on a regenerative farm in Northwest Arkansas. Their birds spend every day outside doing what chickens do best: roaming and foraging for food. Chickens that get to be chickens – instead of being cooped up – are juicier, more tender, and nutritious. Heirloom breeds taste entirely different from the broiler chickens on aisle 8. Because they aren’t given antibiotics and are allowed to grow at a normal rate, their muscle cells are denser in protein, resulting in more protein and omega-3s pound for pound. And because of their non-GMO, nutrient-rich diet, their meat is higher in antioxidants and vitamins.

What is Regenerative Farming?

From depleting our soil of nutrients to emitting copious amounts of greenhouse gases, the way much of our food is grown takes a significant toll on the earth. Regenerative agriculture considers the health of the whole environment. Chickens raised on a regenerative farm can actually help reverse climate change since regenerative farming reintroduces nutrients to depleted soil, which in turn captures carbon, increases biodiversity, and makes waterways cleaner. This system also better supports farmers. Cooks Venture chickens eat a more diverse diet, which means regional crop farmers can transition from monoculture farming to growing a diverse mix of feed crops.

By partnering with producers like Cooks Venture, together we can help build a better food system and bring you the best quality groceries. Watch for Cooks Venture Spatchcock Chicken, Boneless Skinless Breast Tenders, Chicken Party Wings, Chicken Drumsticks, and Bone-In Skin-On Chicken Thighs the next time you shop with us, and start gathering your recipes!

Love all the positive reviews!
Is this chicken new to IF….the grassfed kind I’ve rec’d from you in recent months is so far above in flavor from what I’ve purchased at the store? So is this adding to or replacing?
Whichever, you can count on me to continue enjoying IF chicken.
And people, try the lamb tamales….terrif!!!

This is the only chicken I buy now! My kids even noticed a difference in taste and they normally don’t care for chicken but devoured this!

Loved the spatchcock chicken – the flavor was fabulous and the chew as good as it gets – almost like the chickens we raised many years ago . I understand why people with not a lot of time would like their chicken spatchcocked, but I would prefer to roast a whole chicken which has not been cut up the back. Is it possible to get one of their chickens unspatchcocked?

I love these chickens, but I am wondering how long can I keep it refrigerated before I need to use it?

Usually you can keep raw chicken in the fridge up to two days, while cooked chicken usually lasts around 3-4 days in the fridge! Of course, always use your best discretion and never eat anything your unsure about ????

Are these chickens previously frozen? Sometimes they seem frozen when I receive them and sometimes not. I am afraid to freeze in case they have been frozen and defrosted. Kindly let me know.

Yes, the chicken is frozen while at our warehouse and then under refrigeration by the ice pack in your box while making it’s way to you. According to the USDA, foods that have been thawed under refrigeration can be refrozen safely!

Cooks Venture Chicken is the very best! Love that you carry it and glad you’re looking to work with them long term. If you visit their website they have a few videos on the ways they raise these chickens. Very interesting. Their chicken is nothing like grocery store chicken. Everyone should try it. You won’t be sorry.

One of the best chickens I have purchased. I usually buy Mary’s chicken from the grocery store. Really good chicken too, a bit more costly than this brand from imperfect and just as tasty, if not better. Thank you for having this option.

I just received some chicken breast from Cooks Venture and I’m blown away. The most amazing chicken I’ve ever had…nothing like those huge, tough, grocery store breasts. This will be a staple in my box.
