Adda Veggie Broccoli Burgers with Secret Sauce

Image credit: Alanna Taylor Tobin | The Bojon Gourmet

These Broccoli Burgers are the perfect way to make a healthy, fresh veggie burger on the grill. The trick is to pan-fry the patties over the stove first, before transferring them to finish on the grill. If you look out the window and you don’t see grilling weather, no worries, we’ve included a recipe for stovetop burgers as well.

Recipe from Down to Cook Foods. You can now get their beloved Adda Veggie Protein Mixes from Imperfect.

Makes 4 Broccoli Burgers

Ingredients

Burger Patties

  • 1 package Adda Veggie Protein Mix Original Blend
  • 2 heads broccoli
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil (plus 1 tbsp more if not grilling)

Fixings

  • 4 slices American cheese (or substitute vegan cheese)
  • ½ onion, thinly sliced (plus 1/4 more for the secret sauce)
  • 4 leaves butter lettuce
  • 4 slices beefsteak tomato
  • “Secret Sauce” (see recipe below)
  • 4 kaiser rolls (or burger buns)

Instructions:

Included are directions for cooking either on the grill or over the stove.

On the grill

  1. Prepare a full package of Adda Veggie using broccoli. Handshape into 4 burger-sized patties.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook burger for 2-3 minutes each side until golden brown and crisp. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Make secret sauce (see directions below) and refrigerate.
  4. Meanwhile, heat up the grill to medium heat (approx. 350° F).
  5. Cut the onion into ¼-inch thick slices.  Grill the sliced onions until lightly softened and grill-marked on both sides.
  6. Place cooked Adda Veggie broccoli burgers onto the grill. Once the bottom of each patty has grill marks, flip and place American cheese slice on top of each burger. Cover the grill to melt the cheese and remove the patties from the grill when the cheese is melted.
  7. Slice the kaiser rolls in half and toast, cut face down, on the grill.  Remove from the grill and generously spread both buns with secret sauce. Top with butter lettuce, broccoli cheeseburger patties, sliced tomato, and grilled onions.
  8. Serve immediately, with any additional secret sauce on the side.

On the Stove

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cut the onion into ¼-inch thick slices. Add the onion and cook until soft, translucent, and a little brown. Skip this step if you prefer raw onions in your burger.
  2. Prepare a full package of Adda Veggie using broccoli. Handshape into 4 burger-sized patties.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook burger for 4-5 minutes each side until golden brown and crisp.
  4. Flip burgers and place American cheese slices on top of each burger. Cover the pan to melt the cheese and remove the patties when the cheese is melted. Transfer to a plate
  5. Make secret sauce (see directions below) and refrigerate.
  6. Slice the kaiser rolls in half and toast on the same pan you made the burgers on. Remove and generously spread both buns with secret sauce. Top with butter lettuce, broccoli cheeseburger patties, sliced tomato, and grilled onions.
  7. Serve immediately, with any additional secret sauce on the side.

Secret Sauce

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise (or vegan mayo)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • ¼ onion
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish or 1 sweet pickle, minced

Instructions

  1. Mince onion (hot tip: you can use the parts of the onion that don’t slice into neat burger rings).
  2. Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl and store in refrigerator.

Recipe Notes and Variations

  • This recipe can be made with just about any veggie. So if you’re not a broccoli person, consider swapping it out for chopped cauliflower or mushroom.
